Roofing Membrane Welding: TPO & PVC Done Properly
Single-ply roofing — TPO and PVC — has become the standard for flat roofs across the Gulf, and every square meter of it depends on hot-air welded seams. Done right, the seam outlives the membrane. Done wrong, the roof leaks within a season of UAE summer.
The main machine: automatic overlap welder
Production seams on a roof are welded by a self-propelled hot air machine. The Weldy Roofer RW3400 (3500 W) maintains constant speed, temperature and pressure across the roof — the three variables a hand weld cannot hold over hundreds of meters. For smaller roofs, terraces and tighter details, the compact Miniwelder Roof 2 (800 W, 40 mm seam) is easier to maneuver and transport.
The hand tools that finish the job
Upstands, corners, penetrations and flashings are welded by hand: an Energy HT1600 with a wide slot nozzle and silicone roller, or a heat gun kit with pressure roller. A full roofing crew carries one automatic machine and two hand tools.
Welding in Gulf conditions
- Surface temperature swings are extreme — a membrane at 60 °C in the afternoon welds differently than at 25 °C at dawn. Re-run trial seams when conditions change.
- Dust is the enemy — wipe seam areas before welding; dust creates channels that fail probe testing.
- Probe-test every seam once cooled, and check with a seam probe along the edge.
